What this site is
TrainGaze shows railway maps, timetables, and live train positions, and it shows advertising. There are no accounts and no payments. Train positions and timetables are not information about you. Advertising and analytics cookies are used only if you accept them. What they are, and how to refuse or withdraw that acceptance, is on the cookie page.
What we actually process
- The request that loads the page. To send you the site, the network carries your IP address. That is necessary to deliver the page you asked for.
- CloudFront access logs. The public edge writes a log of each request to a private store in Amazon Web Services, Sydney (
ap-southeast-2). The log includes the IP address and the country derived from it. It does not include cookies. Objects expire after 90 days. The country counts are how we see where the site is opened from. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in operating and understanding the service. Sydney is outside the European Economic Area, so a log of a visit from the EU is a transfer out of the EEA. - Error reports from the page. If the page throws an error, the browser sends the error kind, a short message, a stack trace, and the path to our own server (
POST /api/client-error). No third-party script does this. The report is written to the application log. It is not stored in a database of users. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in fixing breakage. - Basemap requests. The map style is loaded by your browser from MapTiler. That request leaves this site and carries the usual connection data, including your IP address, to MapTiler. We do not receive a copy of their logs.
- Choices kept on your device. The basemap and country you pick, the layout of the panels, and your connection-search options are stored in this browser’s
localStorage. They are not sent to us as a profile. See the cookie page. - The consent question. The map loads Google’s consent tool, Google Privacy & messaging, which asks whether you accept advertising and analytics cookies. Google delivers that tool inside its AdSense script, so the AdSense script loads with the page, before you answer. Loading it sends the usual connection data, including your IP address, to Google, and your answer is stored on your device. Loading it does not request an advertisement. See the cookie page. Lawful basis: the legal obligation to ask for consent before those cookies are set.
- The analytics question. The map itself asks whether you accept Google Analytics cookies. Your answer is kept in this browser’s localStorage and is not sent anywhere. Until you accept, Google Analytics is not loaded. See the cookie page.
- Advertising and analytics, after you accept. If you accept, advertising partners set cookies and receive your IP address and a cookie identifier, so they can show an ad, limit how often you see it, and measure whether it was displayed or clicked. Analytics cookies measure how the site is used, including how an ad performed; the analytics service is Google Analytics, which receives the pages you open, your IP address and a cookie identifier. No advertisement is requested and no advertising or analytics cookie is set before that acceptance. Lawful basis: consent. A partner may be outside the European Economic Area, so an accepted ad is a transfer out of the EEA. You can refuse, and you can withdraw later, from the cookie page.
What we do not do
No account, no payment card, and no third-party error tracker. We do not set an advertising or analytics cookie unless you have accepted it. We do not keep a marketing list.
Who receives it
Amazon Web Services hosts the site and holds the edge logs, in Sydney. MapTiler receives the browser’s request for the basemap. Google receives the request for its AdSense script, which carries the consent question. If you accept advertising, the advertising partners in that choice receive the data on the cookie page. We do not sell a list of users.
How long
Edge logs are deleted after 90 days. Error reports live only in the application log. Layout choices stay in your browser until you clear site data. The record of your advertising choice stays on the device until you change it or clear site data. An advertising or analytics cookie then lasts for the period that partner set, and it stops being used once you withdraw consent.
